Recognizing Metabolic Syndrome
High Cholesterol – HDL (good cholesterol) less than 40 for men and less than 50 for women. Triglycerides greater than 150.
Abdominal Obesity – waist-line greater than 40 “ for men and 35” in women. The diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome is typically concluded when a person has three out of the four criteria.
Causes of Metabolic Syndrome
About 5 percent of normal weight people, 20 to 25 percent of overweight people and 60 percent of obese individuals, have Metabolic Syndrome. The number one cause of this syndrome (www.wellnessii.com) is lifestyle. People in industrialized nations, particularly America, live much more sedentary lives than we did say 30 years ago. As a whole, the population is much less active than previous generations, we are more stressed out, and we take in too many carbohydrates and as a result are very overweight. The other cause for this syndrome is familial or genetic predisposition. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and body types all can typically run in families. Smoking tobacco is a lesser trigger that has also been implicated in the causation of Metabolic Syndrome.
Importance of Recognition
So why do we care so much in recognizing and diagnosing Metabolic Syndrome? Typically, people with this syndrome have all sorts of health complications including diabetes, coronary arterial disease, stroke and heart attacks. A person with Metabolic Syndrome has about a 30-fold increase of developing full type II diabetes and about a four times increase risk of heart attack over the normal population. There have also been studies linking Metabolic Syndrome and obesity to Fatty liver disease, which in turn can progress to cirrhosis. In addition, people with this syndrome can have a greater chance of acquiring sleep apnea, dementia later on in life and kidney function decline.
Catch It Early
It is important to identify people who are at risk for developing Metabolic Syndrome, both by self-recognition and by medical intervention and diagnosis. Early intervention is the key to preventing complications before they worsen. Metabolic Syndrome also occurs in childhood. It is estimated that about 5 percent of children have this syndrome with an occurrence rate of almost 50 percent in severely obese children. Children that have a family history of diabetes and heart disease and have a sedentary and overweight lifestyle should be screened early.
Treatment
Habit Change – Wellness Institute & Medical Spa Can Help. The most important treatment of Metabolic Syndrome is lifestyle modification. Although often easier said than done, people with this syndrome are at high risk for diabetes, stroke and heart disease and it is important to adjust their lifestyle to diminish the health risk. The Wellness Institute & Medical Spa offer massage for stress, acupuncture for smoking and weight and hypnosis for weight management and improved life balance. The secret of life is moderation.
Incorporating some type of exercise and trying to be less sedentary, is very important in not only losing weight, but also reducing insulin resistance. In addition, many of us have diets that are heavy in fats, especially saturated fats and high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are turned into sugar in our bodies and then used as fuel. The problem is that most of us take in too much carbs that we do not utilize and the extra is converted and stored in our bodies as triglycerides. Overall, one of the best diets to follow is that of the Mediterranean diet. This incorporates many of the foods that are consumed in the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean diet consists of lean proteins such as chicken and fish, along with a good mixture of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy tree nuts and healthy tasty oils. Olive oil is mainly used which is low in saturated fat. In addition, tree nuts are low in saturated fat but should be limited to no more than a handful a day since they still are high in calories.
When to call Kaner Medical Group
When lifestyle modification is not enough, especially with a strong family history of diabetes and heart disease, medical intervention is necessary. Metabolic patients and diabetics are in a chronic inflammatory state with regards to their blood vessels. These vessels in turn, attract cholesterol plaque like a magnet, much greater than the general population. A group of medications called the statins, have been studied and proven to reduce this inflammation and lower cholesterol levels in high-risk people. A health care provider can assess as to whether a person is at such a risk for complications that they require medicine to control their sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure. Metabolic Syndrome is an ever-increasing health risk in our society. The key to remaining healthy and combat this disorder, is to identify at risk people early in life and intervene with lifestyle modification and if necessary medication. Consult a health care provider if you feel you may be at risk for this syndrome and need medical intervention.
